Playa Madera is a great sandy beach with easy access (assuming you are not traveling during the rainy season) only about 15 minutes by car north of San Juan Del Sur in South western Nicaragua. While considered one of the more popular beaches to the north of San Juan, it is still relatively quiet, and extremely serene. It offers great beach walking, rocky tide pools, swimming and wave play as well as some great surf! While not a surfer myself (yet), based on being there and and talking to people who have surfed it - Its not the type of surf where you will fear for your life but had great surf on most days - sandy bottom, fast and racy with occasional barrels.

This beach literally has no development on it currently. There is a simple wooden bunkhouse at the beach itself. One of our friends from San Juan knows the owners of the property right behind the main beach, but be prepared to put up a hefty sum for this great location. Not only is the property right next to the beach but it rears up into a hill overlooking the beach, offering multiple ways to give many ocean views on a development while still allowing public beach access to the surfers and visitors that love it so much. If you are visiting the San Juan Del Sur Area this beach is a must visit! If you are looking for some more - here is a great short video from Lonely Planet TV.
