Further Musing on the Nicaragua Transportation Strike
May 17th, 2008 by Wes
All is quiet in San Juan Del Sur. We have had no incidents concerning the strike. As a matter of fact, life is quite normal here now. Most tourists have learned how to get around without taxi or bus. No one is complaining. Life is just moving on like any normal day. I have not been caught up on any other happenings about the strike. I would say the country is very safe to travel through. Just make sure you have your own form of transportation. As I write I am actually feeling quite sad. Many Nicaraguan families are really being affected by this strike. They will lose money they need to feed their families. And here I am going about my day, I have a car and a driver if I need one so I can do my work. And today my work was to go play. I took a scuba lesson at Pelican Eyes with Master Instructor Glenn Cambell, proprietor of Scuba Shack Nicaragua. We had a wonderful afternoon learning the basics of scuba and we will go out into the Pacific Ocean on Monday for our 40 foot dive. I am doing all of this while the taxi and bus drivers stand on the street corner on strike and unable to make money for their families.
One thing I did learn down here today is how much foreigners band together to help the people of this community. I discovered current fundraising projects and community programs designed to further enhance the town people’s lives. Our investments, our money and our interests in Nicaragua have a major implact on many people. Just by visiting and becoming a tourist of Nicaragua your presence and your money do help this country.
