The roads are a changin’

(from San Juan Del Sur) As much as I have decided I do not like Daniel Ortega I have to admit infrastructure has improved immensely. Whether or not he deserves the credit, the highway system in Southeastern Nicaragua continues its dramatic improvement. The road through Masaya is complete. We saved 20 minutes and three ribs. The 19 Kilometers from La Virgen to
San Juan is under construction. (see our previous post on La Virgen) All I can say is some things must get worse before they get better. This stretch is awful, I mean terrible. The good news is, the bridges are nearly completed and grading in progressing. The road will be completed later this year and the experiences of just a year ago will be gone. Travelers from around the world will think the well-paved road has always been the norm. A few tourists from the era of 1998 – 2008 will have the memories of Nicaragua before the completed highway. I am glad to have the experiences of the older roads, that is part of the adventure I came to Nica for. I like the rawness and rough culture of the third-world. Now, however, I am spoiled. I love the new roads.
I do not know if Daniel should get any of the credit for these new highways, all I do know is that for decades the highways were promises never to happen, and now they are being completed at a very quick pace. Next? The Coastal Highway? I will gather more info about the latest highway promise. Once the asphalt starts getting poured for this stretch of highway, investors can expect huge profits on any land between Costa Rica and Brito. I will be here for the next two weeks assessing the current market and preparing a report for investors. Attached are some pictures from the construction on La Virgen.
