Interested in Nicaragua? - Politics, Humanitarian efforts, interesting stories? In the right side of this blog there is a section entitled news of interest. This section of items is updated daily as we see stories of interest on Nicaragua. It is actually tied to a del.ico.us account for coastal dreams. As we find a story that we think our readers may be interested in, it gets tagged from our browser, loaded to del.ico.us, and then automatically displays inside this blog! Although it only displays the most recent additions you can always go back and look at other articles of interest.
Over the past day a couple of interesting article have sufaced. One is about Daniel Ortega’s wife Rosario Murillo. It gives some great insights into the other half of this ‘dynamic due’ (read with heavy sarcasm). This article backs up pretty much what we have heard from our partners in Nicaragua. Rosario may not be the mouth, but sure is the hand behind the puppet called Daniel Ortega.
The second story that caught my eye today was about some work going on by the Carbon Fund in Nicaragua to help build innovative reforestation projects.
The organizations Return to Forest project is using carbon finance to reforest about 1,000 acres (406 hectares) of land in the southwestern region of Nicaragua to mitigate climate change while supporting local communities and conserving biodiversity.
I think these types of innovative programs are great, but the capitalist in me says there are ways to make a revenue generating business but also serving the same interests of this initiative, which would create a true win-win all around. Why does it have to be all non profit? How could you create a tourist based business related to reforestation? I am sure there would be people interested in participating in a program that both helps the environment but also serves as a style of vacation. Why do you think eco-resorts have done so well? Many people want to do good as well as go on a travel excursion. Nicaragua is ripe for this type of business. There are abundant resources and needs, with little to no offerings in most places. What do you think?
